Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Booh, Tarn Taran got 3rd position at National level under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan as conveyed by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) New Delhi. Dr. H.K. Verma, Director of Extension Education said that there are about 680 KVKs working in the country out of which KVK Tarn Taran has got 3rd position in Swachhtta Award while KVK Datia (Madhya Pradesh) and KVK Bargarh (Odisha) got first two positions. Dr. Verma said that Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director (Training) is the incharge of KVK, Tarn Taran and maintaining the KVK in an excellent way which is the main reason for winning this award. Dr. Balwinder Kumar said that parameters considered for Swachhta mission involved e-office, ambience and cleanliness at KVK campus along with maintenance of labs and sanitation drive at important places and villages in the district. The major activities involved under this campaign consisted of cleanliness drive, vermi-compost preparation for proper waste management and preparation of carry bags from waste cloth.
Besides above activities, awareness on various sanitary measures were also made at households as well as public places. One day seminar on cleanliness drives at KVK Campus under the slogan “Our campus, Swachh campus” during Swachhta Pakhwada was conducted. Farmers, farm women and rural youth from different villages of district Tarn Taran had participated in this programme. Oath was taken by all the participants and staff of KVK to keep their houses and surrounding swachh and to motivate others to keep their surrounding weed free and clean.
KVK conducted Swachhtta campaign in six village of district Tarn Taran in which Sarpanch / Nambardar of different villages got involved in swachhta activities. Swachhtta Abhiyan at Govt. schools were also conducted and students were apprised about importance of cleanliness and Swachhta through lectures. School children were motivated to create hygiene at individual level starting from cleanliness of their personal belongings and surroundings. Segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste was advised by KVK scientists and also implemented through distribution of dustbins. Switching over from plastic bags to jute bags for the collection of dry garbage was also suggested as healthy measures. Local people were made aware about shunning the practice of excess use of diesel/petrol and instructed to use bicycle in their daily routine life. Farmers were also advised for not to burn the crop residue especially paddy for creating healthy and better living environment for human and animals.
Dr. Amarjit Singh Nanda, Vice Chancellor and Dr. HK Verma, Director Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana along with Dr. Rajbir Singh, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Zone-1, PAU Campus, Ludhiana congratulated the faculty and staff of KVK Tarn Taran for obtaining this national award in a short span its working. Further it is important to mention that this KVK started functioning from 2012 in the district.
